Season of Sharing: Breast Cancer Resource Center
This organization provides breast cancer treatment services to the under-privileged and non-insured patients, and the women they help could use an extra hand this winter season.
Q: Jessica Pavelka is here from the Breast Cancer Resource Center and for our Season of Sharing, we always like to know, of course, what an organization does and then what they need. But, specifically, tell us about your role with the resource center.

A:Absolutely. I work for the Breast Cancer Resource Center at Brackenridge Hospital and I work with the under-served and non-insured patients.
Q: And so for that, what are you able to help them with.
A:Well, we help them from, you know, from the moment they come in with an normal mammogram all the way to the treatment until they actually are healed and doing good.
Q: What is the situation right now in terms – you know, we know so much about breast cancer, but maybe a lot of people who have not been directly impacted, don't realize the numbers. I mean, put it into perspective for us. This is something that – how many women do you think that you all serve just in a year?
A:In a year, well, they say that, you know, one in seven actually are going to be having breast cancer, but in a year probably I pretty much see a good 100 women diagnosed with breast cancer.
Q: So that's really – there's a lot of people who probably should know about your services that, you know, make them a little bit more aware here today. But we also want to make people aware about how they can help. So for your wish list, what is it that people could do for you?

A:Yeah, for the wish list, you know, we definitely want to make the Christmas so much, you know, easier in their journey, so I would like for them to have a better Christmas. If we can get, you know, some gift cards probably, you know, like Wal-Mart, H-E-B. We need help with their meals, you know, they can't afford that.
Q: Right.
A:They can't afford that and we can get some, you know, Walgreens gift cards, something like that, to help, you know, for the co-payments and things like that for their medicine.
Q: Okay, well there's lots of different ways that you can help including those. Jessica, thank you very much for being here.
A:You're welcome.
