The Mitchell Center in San Marcos tutors children after school. They were recently voted the success story of the month by the foundation that helped them get started, the Center for Community Support (CCS) of Texas A&M University.
In 1993, Kyev Tatum and his wife Martha decided to bring the old building back to life. It was part of the former colored school, the Old Dunbar School, and the Mitchell Center was the wing that hadn't caught fire when the school burned down.
The Mitchell Center offers a variety of academic enrichement. They have a computer lab with Internet access, a summer reading program, a senior citizens’ inter-generational program.
In 2001, the Tatums opened the San Marcos Preparatory School, a charter school to help kids who had been labeled at-risk. They opened kindergarten through fifth grade with one classroom each. They now have two kindergarten classes and added sixth grade. Next year, they’ll add seventh grade, and the following year, eighth grade.

The Tatums also run a pre-school and a Boys and Girls Club and say they aren't finished yet. Their goal is to continue the growth with a state of the art center that will house the school, the boys and girls club, and a youth center.
