Texas fishing holes get trout
1/3/2004 12:00 PM
By: Staff and wire reports

Zachary Anderson has fished all his life. His favorite equipment?

"A Sponge Bob fishing pole and I've got an orange bright worm, those work the best," the three year old said.

This year, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will put 275,000 trout into Texas waterways. At recent stockings in Blanco State Park and at Canyon Dam, near New Braunfels, anglers got the chance to bring home up to 5 fish each.

"When you show up somewhere like this, you know people have read it in the paper, they know that we're doing our job. They actually see us do our job and that's one of the fulfillments," said Nathan Pence of TPWD.

The program attracts fishing veterans like Zachary and newcomers.

"It's great to see the little ones fish. They catch that very first fish of their lifetime, and boy, that smile just goes from ear to ear when they latch onto that big trophy trout," Pence said.

Got trout?

Texas Parks and Wildlife will stock waterways with trout.

"It's fantastic to get trout fishing right here, I mean, goodness gracious, sometimes you have to go all the way to Colorado to get something like this," said Chris Mallios of League City.

Texas Parks and Wildlife has stocked the cold-water fish throughout the state for the last 20 years. The program is funded through the sale of Texas Freshwater Trout Stamps and donations.

And just below Canyon Damn where Zachary fishes, biologists are monitoring to see if the Guadalupe River is cold enough to keep trout around all year.

Trout fishing should remain good through March.
