Mexican President Vicente Fox and Gov. Rick Perry walked through the Capitol Thursday morning greeting Texas lawmakers along the way.
Fox and his Cabinet sat down with Perry and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and the chairs of various state agencies, such as the railroad commission and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The main part of the meeting was closed to the media and public.
The president and governor pledged to work to iron out differences over Mexico's water debt to the United States. Fox said Mexico will work to provide more water to Texas in accordance with a 1944 treaty.
"On each front, we are advancing, some cases faster, some cases slower, but we work on all fronts," Fox said.
Perry agreed Mexicans should be able to cross the border into America and stay for longer than the currently allowed 72 hours. Canadians are allowed to cross the border and stay in America for six months.
"There is a great discrepancy there and we think that needs to be revisited and an expanded length of time," Perry said.
The leaders also agreed to talk about the reluctance of Texas to accept a certain Mexican identification card from migrants.
Their remarks came in Austin as Fox spent the day meeting with state government and business leaders on the last leg of his three-day trip through the Southwest as Perry and Fox emerged from a closed-door policy meeting attended by high-ranking Texas and Mexican officials.
The leaders say they discussed immigration, commerce and the water debt.
New Mexico legislators this year approved a law that allows New Mexico to issue driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants.
But Perry said he has concerns about accepting the "matricula consular" in Texas and using it for drivers' license applications.
Perry and Fox continue to disagree over the use of the death penalty in Texas on Mexican citizens.
