SAN ANTONIO -- Problems with the early-voting ballot stopped the ballot count dead in its tracks for much of the night in Bexar County.
Bexar elections administrator Cliff Borofsky said election counters are having to inspect each of the 128,000 early votes cast.
The problem has aroused anger from candidates on the San Antonio-area ballot. District Clerk Reagan Greer recalled other recent glitches in recent Bexar County elections. He told the San Antonio Express-News “We are the embarrassment of the state.”
Elections officials said a final Bexar County count might not come until midday Wednesday.
That leaves in question one congressional race and several legislative races, as well as San Antonio's local races.
Bexar County has bought a new $8 million touch-screen voting system, but it won't be ready until next year's citywide election.
In Fort Worth, a programming problem with the straight-ticket box on the ballot delayed the count in Tarrant County.
Election administrator Robert Parten said the problem was found early yesterday. That caused ballots cast for a straight party vote to go untallied.
The problem was been fixed and the ballots were counted again.
