Texas isn't the only the state considering making the HPV vaccine mandatory.
Virginia governor Timothy Kaine recently said he would sign legislation requiring all 6th-grade girls to be vaccinated against the sexually transmitted disease that can cause cervical cancer.
This action would make Virginia the second state to mandate the vaccine for HPV, but unlike Gov. Rick Perry, Kaine would mandate the action through legislation.
The requirement would go into effect for the 2009 school year. If parents were to opt out, they would be required to review provided literature then sign a form.
The federal government has approved Gardasil and has suggested it be given to females before they become sexually active.
