Supporting the new Republican leadership and its agenda proved to be poison for the political careers of several Texas Democratic legislators.
Some Democrats, including longtime Rep. Ron Wilson, D-Houston, were defeated in Tuesday's primary or are headed for runoffs.
Five were tied directly to support for GOP-backed legislation and Republican House Speaker Tom Craddick.
Here's a look:

 | | Wilson specifically was targeted by Democrats for his support of Craddick and Republican supported congressional redistricting. State Board of Education member Alma Allen defeated Wilson, ousting him from a seat he held for 26 years. |
 | | Glenn Lewis of Fort Worth, another Democrat who was part of Craddick's leadership team, lost his bid for another term to Marc Veasey. |
 | | Another issue that rankled Democrats was a civil lawsuit liability bill that capped lawsuit awards for pain and suffering. Former Rep. Tracy King defeated Rep. "Timo'' Garza, D-Eagle Pass, who won the seat from King two years ago. Garza originally voted against tort reform but ultimately supported the final version. |
 | | In Hidalgo County, incumbent Rep. Roberto Gutierrez, D-McAllen fell into a runoff with Veronica Gonzales. Gutierrez had supported the tort reform bill. |
 | | Another defeated Democrat, Rep. Jaime Capelo, D-Corpus Christi, also supported tort reform, but his primary fight focused on a different kind of money issue. The attorney is accused in a civil lawsuit of taking a kickback as part of a settlement in a case he handled. Capelo has said the money was a referral fee and that he returned it. According to vote totals listed on the Nueces County Web site, Capelo finished third behind attorney Abel Herrero and businesswoman Nelda Martinez, who advance to a runoff. |
