Lace up and stretch out for this year’s "News 8K" which will benefit the Capital Area Food Bank. The run/walk begins at 8:08 a.m. on Saturday June 4, 2005. The course starts and ends at 8th and Lavaca. News 8k is the only 8k run/walk in Central Texas.
The course starts at 8th and Lavaca in Downtown Austin. The runners head east and take an immediate right turn onto Congress and run due south to Oltorf. The hill just past Riverside Dr. is deceptively steep. Take a right on Oltorf, a short distance to South 1st Street, turn right and back to downtown where you started. The News 8k has been certified.
The News 8K is designed to challenge 5k runners who want to move up to the next level and give 10k runners a chance to prepare for an upcoming race. No matter what your skill level, you'll have a great time.
Fees are $20 for the 8K run/walk if you pre-register, $25 for the run/walk on race day. Packet pick will be Friday, June 3 at the Riverside Runtex store. You can also register online at signmeupsports.com. Donations of non-perishable food and cash for the Capital Area Food Bank will be accepted at packet pickup and on-sight during race day.
Awards will be given to the top three overall male and female and Master’s male and female winners as well as the following age divisions: 11 and under, 12-15, 16-20, 21-25, 26-30, 31-35, 36-40, 41-45, 46-50, 51-55, 56-60, 61-65, 66+ and Men and Women’s Wheelchair. Timing chip must be worn in order to win prizes.
Meters are free on the weekends in Downtown Austin. Parking should be plentiful with the exception of road closures at the race start/finish line and course route.
News 8 Austin will broadcast the run live, so before tying up your laces set your VCR or Time Warner Cable DVR (digital video recorder) to channel 8 to record the race.
