Maureen McCann knew she wanted to be a broadcast meteorologist at the age of four, when Hurricane Gloria blew through her New England hometown. That sparked her interest in weather. Maureen says broadcast meteorology is the perfect career to channel all of her interests: weather, geography, journalism, public speaking, the outdoors and community service.
Maureen comes to News 8 Austin from a much colder environment, having spent her entire life living in the Northeast. She began her broadcast career at WABI in Bangor, Maine shortly after graduating college. Most recently, she spent three years forecasting the challenges of lake-effect snow at WTVH in Syracuse, New York as the weekday morning meteorologist. Her other work experience includes forecasting in the weather department at the USA Today in Washington, DC and for Sentient Jet in Boston.
In 2002, Maureen earned her BS in Atmospheric Science from Cornell University. In April 2008, Maureen was awarded the American Meteorological Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation, a professional recognition of the quality of her weather broadcasts. Maureen is an active member of both the AMS and the National Weather Association. Locally, she serves as the Secretary/Treasurer of the South Central Texas Chapter of the AMS/NWA.
Maureen is a native of Arlington, Massachusetts, outside of Boston. As an avid skier who also likes to snowshoe, she admits that she misses winter weather here in Central Texas, but she welcomes the change in climate after living in such cold places.
She is a dedicated member of Red Sox Nation, and also likes to cheer on the Patriots and Celtics. Anyone that knows her is aware that Huey Lewis and the News is her favorite band. Maureen holds membership in the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. Her other interests include golf, tennis, rollerblading, winemaking (a hobby she picked up while living in the Finger Lakes region of New York), and traveling. When she’s not forecasting, you can find her running on one of the local hike and bike trails, often with the News 8 running team.
