DESCRIPTION: The Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law invites you to Europe, NATO, and the 21st Century: The Trans-Atlantic Bridge with Admiral James G. Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander, Europe and Commander, U.S. European Command on Friday, November 6, 2009, at 12:00 pm in the LBJ Library Atrium, 10th floor. Lunch will be served.

At a time when globalization has made the world smaller, more interconnected and more vulnerable to transnational threats, debate is lively on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean about how the North Atlantic Alliance will best counter the myriad challenges to the security of its member states. Admiral Stavridis will present an overview of the history, linkages, challenges and opportunities that are informing the debate and shaping the new strategic concept that will springboard NATO into the second decade of the 21st Century and beyond.

Admiral James Stavridis is Supreme Allied Commander, Europe and Commander, U.S. European Command. Most recently he was Commander of U.S. Southern Command in Miami, Florida. He is an accomplished author and has written extensively on topics of leadership and international relations. Admiral Stavridis is a 1976 distinguished graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, the The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University where he earned a Masters of Art in Law and Diplomacy as well as a PhD in International Relations, and a distinguished graduate of both the Naval and National War Colleges. Admiral Stavridis is a Surface Warfare Officer. He commanded the Destroyer USS Barry (DDG-52), Destroyer Squadron 21, and the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group where he directed combat operations in the Arabian Gulf in support of both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Strauss Center is nonpartisan and takes no institutional position on any issue. All statements of fact and all expressions of opinion at Center events are the sole responsibility of the speaker.
